How can I listen to my iPod in a 2009 Hyundai Elantra?

I must be doing something wrong. I try to use my iPod through the USB port, but it’s impossible to pick which song I want to listen to, it’s like on random all the time. There’s no way Hyundai would make such a lame design. Does anyone know how to do it properly?
